On the evening of October 7, at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre in Vladivostok, waves of applause and cheers filled the auditorium as the audience rose to their feet for the Chinese musicians on stage. This marked the successful conclusion of the China National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) Orchestra’s tour in Russia.
Highlights of the Performance
The orchestra performed in three cities—Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Vladivostok—crossing seven time zones over nine days. This journey, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Russia, was far more than simply a musical tour. It is also a vivid portrayal of the long-standing friendship and mutual understanding between the two peoples.
Professor Alexander Polishchuk from the St. Petersburg State Conservatory offered heartfelt praise for the visiting Chinese artists, saying, “The entire performance of the orchestra is exceptional, particularly the string section, which is of world-class quality.” For many audience attending the three concerts, this was their first live encounter with a Chinese orchestra, and they were deeply impressed by the musicians’ profound understanding and exquisite interpretation of Russian compositions. Through their music, “Chinese stories” are reaching broader stages. Anna, a Russian audience member, was particularly struck by the grandeur of Ode to the Red Flag, finding that its vigorous rhythms and stirring melodies deepened her understanding of the Chinese people’s patriotism.
Enthusiastic Audience Reactions
In addition to the performances, a series of exchange activities also took place. Music brings people together and fosters mutual understanding, as evidenced by the “China and Russia: Artistic Performance to Celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 75th Anniversary of China-Russia Diplomatic Relations” held in Moscow, Maestro Li Xincao’s conducting masterclass at the St. Petersburg State Conservatory, and the special concert at the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Vladivostok. “In building a platform for international cultural exchange, the NCPA has always adhered to the principle of ‘bringing in and going global with high standards’. We aim to nurture vibrant exchanges through sustained, balanced, and in-depth efforts,” said Liu Lan, Deputy Secretary of Party Leadership Group of the NCPA.
