The Great Wall Friendship Award is the only and the highest honor conferred by Beijing on foreign nationals who have made outstanding contributions to the capital’s socioeconomic development, international exchanges, and global cooperation. The award is presented once every three years. Since its inauguration in 1999, it has been conferred through 16 editions to a total of 221 foreign recipients.
The selection process for the 17th Beijing Great Wall Friendship Award has now officially opened. Nominations are now being accepted.
I. Criteria
The selection period for the 17th Beijing Great Wall Friendship Award covers the years 2024 to 2026. An eligible foreign candidate should have long-term work experience in Beijing or maintain long-term cooperation and exchanges with the organization(s) in the city. The candidate should be friendly toward China, demonstrate integrity and goodwill, comply with Chinese laws and regulations, have a good public reputation and social image, and meet at least one of the following criteria:
(I) The candidate shall possess internationally leading expertise and broad influence in his/her professional field, have actively contributed to the development of the capital in the new era, and have made outstanding contributions to Beijing’s strategic position as the Four Centers (national political center, cultural center, center for international exchanges, and center for scientific discovery and technological innovation).
(II) The candidate shall have investment, innovation, or a business venture in Beijing, have actively introduced advanced technologies and management expertise to the city, play a leading and demonstrative role, have generated significant economic or social benefits, and have made outstanding contributions to the city’s high-quality economic development.
(III) The candidate shall be an active promoter of Beijing’s international scientific and technological exchanges and cooperation, have helped attract global high-end resources, have contributed to Beijing’s “Four First-Class” initiative, and have made outstanding contributions to enhancing the city’s scientific and technological innovation capabilities and commercialization of research outcomes.
(IV) The candidate shall actively participate in international cooperation in Beijing’s healthcare sector, help improve the city’s medical services, and make outstanding contributions to the development of Beijing’s pharmaceutical and health industries.
(V) The candidate shall have actively built platforms for people-to-people exchanges between China and other countries, promoted Beijing’s international friendship and cooperation, and made outstanding contributions to enhancing the city’s cultural soft power and global influence.
(VI) The candidate shall have actively engaged in international exchanges and cooperation in areas such as education, culture, and sports in Beijing, introduced advanced international concepts and high-quality resources, and made outstanding contributions to the development and internationalization of the relevant sector(s).
II. How to Nominate
Qualified foreign candidates may be nominated to the Foreign Affairs Office of the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality through the foreign affairs offices of the CPC district committees and district governments in Beijing, the departments, commissions, offices and bureaus under the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee and the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality, the enterprises’ headquarters, people’s organizations, higher education institutions, municipal institutions in Beijing, as well as the Beijing-based agencies of the CPC Central Committee and the central government, universities, research institutes, and central state-owned enterprises.
