From August 8 to 16, the 17th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) 2024 Global Finals (“Boya 1909” Cup) was held in Beijing.

It marks the IESO’s debut on the Chinese mainland. Mentougou district, rich in geological resources, has become the only venue for the field exam of this competition.

Four villages in Mentougou district - Huiyu Village in Junzhuang Town, Xiaweidian Village and Dingjiatan Village in Miaofengshan Town, and Dongzhaitang Village in Zhaitang Town - served as the field exam locations for the competition. They hosted 136 contestants from 35 countries and regions around the globe.

Wang Yibo, the individual test champion at the 17th IESO, said, “I was deeply impressed by the beautiful natural environment and excellent geological conditions of the field exam sites in Mentougou district. The field investigation into the rock structures was a great experience for me.”

According to reports, Mentougou district has been recognized as the “Designated Field Exam Site for the IESO”.
