Ann Derwin, as she shares her insights and experiences about Beijing. It's like opening a captivating picture book filled with tender and vibrant imagery, showcasing not only the city's urban landscape and the enchanting essence of Chinese culture, but also personal anecdotes that add depth and resonance to her portrayal of daily life in Beijing.
The Ambassador Who Finds Joy in Residing in Beijing's Hutongs
Ambassador Derwin expressed her fondness for Beijing's hutongs, describing them as being gradually awakened and evolved. She observes how narrow entrances of the alleys and hutongs showcase an ever-changing display of flowers and vegetables, following the rhythm of the seasons. As one strolls through these neighborhoods, a true sense of the vibrant local life is palpable. Drawing a parallel with the lyrics of the Irish band Westlife, she finds the richness, authenticity, and vitality here in the hutongs similar to that of an Irish city. To Ambassador Derwin, the hutongs not only hold immense value as Beijing's cultural heritage, but also serve as a significant gateway to experiencing the city's unique charm. They represent a record of her personal memories of this city.
During the interview, Ambassador Derwin highlighted her enjoyment of visiting Houhai Park, particularly during the winter season. She painted a picturesque scene of willow trees gently brushing against the banks, while the frozen surface of the lake became a lively setting for ice-skating residents. The tantalizing scents of traditional Beijing snacks emanating from nearby shops add to the atmosphere, showcasing the city's unwavering vitality, even in the coldest months. Additionally, she expressed her admiration for the panoramic view of Beijing from Jingshan Park during the enchanting twilight hours. The setting sun casts a warm glow over the entire city, allowing her to appreciate the grandeur of the city's central axis. Recently, Ambassador Derwin took her family to prominent landmarks such as the Palace Museum, the Summer Palace, the Temple of Heaven, and the Beijing Zoo. She said that Beijing, with its harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, offers an ideal environment for working, living, and savoring life's pleasures, and that the city is an endless source of exploration, as there are countless destinations worth discovering.
Dublin Celebrates Chinese Lunar New Year Annually
Ambassador Derwin shared that in 2024, as the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Ireland and China approaches, they are now diligently planning a series of celebratory events aimed at strengthening exchanges and cooperation in education, culture, and various other fields with China. Notably, the Irish capital city Dublin, as a sister city of Beijing, joins in the festivities to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year every year.
Ambassador Derwin firmly believes that culture plays a pivotal role in fostering connections and exchanges between peoples. She highlighted Ireland's abundant tourism resources, encompassing breathtaking landscapes, enchanting castle architecture steeped in history, and renowned activities like horse racing and golf, making it an exceptional destination for travelers. She mentioned the tour of Westlife, a beloved Irish boyband, who recently performed in Beijing and other cities across China. They have showcased the Chinese people's deep appreciation for Irish music. Furthermore, she revealed that the traditional Irish dance performance "Riverdance" will once again grace Chinese stages before long.
New Year Blessings from the Ambassador
Ireland, known for its breathtaking landscapes, has been a prolific producer of writers and poets. Ambassador Derwin also shares a profound love for literature. As snowflakes gently fell outside her window, the journalist invited her to extend New Year blessings to the residents of Beijing.
