During the International Union of Architects (UIA) General Assembly held in Copenhagen on July 9, José Luis Cortés, President of the UIA, announced that Beijing has been selected as the host city for the 30th UIA World Congress of Architects, which will take place in 2029.
The UIA World Congress of Architects is a triennial event jointly organized by the UIA and UNESCO. The host city is designated as the “World Capital of Architecture” of that year. Beijing successfully hosted the 20th UIA World Congress of Architects in 1999 and will host the congress again, 30 years later. The successful bidding signifies China’s commendable achievements in urban construction, which have been recognized by the UIA. This is of great significance in strengthening international exchanges and cooperation in the architecture and design industry and improving Beijing’s role as a center for international exchanges. At the same time, it will also help to drive the transformation and upgrading of the architecture and design industry, stimulate architectural creativity, and enhance the industry’s influence, thus promoting the implementation of Beijing’s master plan and the capital’s high-quality development.
During the Assembly, Zhang Li, Dean of the School of Architecture at Tsinghua University, was elected as vice president of the UIA.
