On the morning of March 21, Yin Li, Secretary of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, met with leaders of multinational pharmaceutical companies and industry associations.
Yin Li noted that in recent years, the Chinese government has placed great emphasis on public health, prioritizing the protection of people’s health in its development strategy and exploring a healthcare reform path suited to China’s national conditions. China has built the world’s largest healthcare system, and the overall health of the population has significantly improved. In Beijing, life expectancy has reached nearly 84 years, and the infant mortality rate stands at 1.3‰. He added that Beijing serves as the national political center, cultural center, center for international exchanges, and international center for sci-tech innovation, and is also a major hub for biopharmaceutical innovation and development. With a large pharmaceutical market, strong research capabilities, and increasingly comprehensive full-chain policy support in recent years, Beijing’s healthcare industry has grown rapidly, with a total industrial scale exceeding one trillion yuan. Yin Li emphasized that multinational pharmaceutical companies and industry associations have long been deeply engaged in China and rooted in Beijing, making important contributions to public health and the development of the Healthy Beijing initiative. He expressed hope that all parties would further deepen collaboration in medical innovation, accelerate the translation of scientific and technological achievements, and expand the use of artificial intelligence in drug discovery, clinical trials, and intelligent diagnostics, thereby enhancing “AI + healthcare” integration. He also called for increased investment and business presence in Beijing, active participation in the development of the BioPark, and joint efforts to promote the growth of the pharmaceutical industry. He encouraged the development of more innovative products and services that align with market needs and public health demands, benefiting more patients. In addition, he called for strengthened international health exchanges and cooperation to contribute to building a global community of health for all.
Representatives of multinational pharmaceutical companies and industry associations, including Stephen J. Ubl, President and CEO of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA); Severin Schwan, Chairman of the Board of Roche; and Vas Narasimhan, CEO of Novartis, noted that China has made remarkable achievements in the field of healthcare. The dynamic innovation ecosystem and burgeoning industrial development of Beijing provide broad opportunities for development. Looking ahead, they expressed strong confidence and stated that they will further expand investment and business presence in Beijing, deepen cooperation in areas such as innovative drug R&D, clinical trials, and digital healthcare, and make greater contributions to advancing the Healthy China initiative and improving public health and well-being.
Jin Wei, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee and Vice Mayor of Beijing, attended the meeting.
