On the morning of February 6, 2025, President Xi Jinping held talks with Sultan of Brunei Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, who is in China for a state visit, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Xi Jinping pointed out that the traditional friendship between China and Brunei has a time-honored history. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations more than 30 years ago, the two countries have continuously deepened political mutual trust, actively synergized development strategies, and achieved fruitful results in practical cooperation in various fields. The two countries have also maintained good coordination in international and regional affairs, set a fine example of equality and mutual benefit between countries of different sizes, and made positive contributions to regional peace, stability, development and prosperity. The joint building of a China-Brunei community with a shared future conforms to the trend of the times, serves the fundamental interests of the two countries and two peoples, and opens a new chapter in bilateral relations. The two countries should build on the momentum, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation and strategic coordination, respect and trust each other, treat each other with sincerity, and always be good neighbors linked by the sea, good friends with mutual trust, and good partners for common development.
Xi Jinping stressed that China is ready to join hands with Brunei on the path of national development and bring more benefits to the two peoples. The two sides should enhance the synergy between the Belt and Road Initiative and Brunei's Wawasan 2035, advance the two flagship projects of the Guangxi-Brunei Economic Corridor and the Hengyi petrochemical project, and build the China-BIMP-EAGA and the "New Land-Sea Corridor" as dual hubs. China is willing to encourage more enterprises to invest and do business in Brunei, and support Brunei's development of digital economy, artificial intelligence and new energy industries to help the country diversify its economy. China supports the two countries in conducting research cooperation on hybrid rice and welcomes Brunei to make good use of such platforms as the China International Import Expo and the China-ASEAN Expo to expand exports of high-quality agricultural and fishery products to China. The two sides should carry forward the fine tradition of people-to-people and cultural exchanges, deepen exchanges and cooperation in education, culture, tourism, and sports and at the sub-national level, jointly promote an equal and orderly multipolar world and universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization, safeguard international fairness and justice, and play a positive role in promoting international and regional peace and stability.
Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah extended New Year wishes for the Year of the Snake to President Xi Jinping and the Chinese people. He said that under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, China has maintained sustained rapid economic growth and lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty, which is a remarkable achievement. China puts forward three global initiatives, playing a key role in world peace, stability and development and demonstrating its responsibility as a major country. Brunei and China have always respected and trusted each other, and bilateral relations have continued to grow, with both sides working together towards a Brunei-China community with a shared future. He thanked China for supporting Brunei's economic diversification strategy and said that bilateral cooperation has benefited the people of Brunei. Brunei firmly pursues the one-China policy and is willing to consolidate the strategic cooperative partnership with China to bring more benefits to the two peoples. Brunei is willing to strengthen political mutual trust with China, deepen cooperation in trade, agriculture, fishery, energy and other fields, and promote people-to-people and cultural exchanges. At present, the international community is facing new complex situations and challenges, and Brunei is willing to strengthen cooperation with China, uphold multilateralism and free trade, and safeguard the common interests of developing countries.
The two sides issued the Joint Statement between the People's Republic of China and Brunei Darussalam on Advancing the Strategic Cooperative Partnership towards a China-Brunei Community with a Shared Future.
After the talks, the two heads of state jointly witnessed the signing of a number of cooperation documents in judicial, Belt and Road cooperation, economy and trade, media and other fields.
Before the talks, Xi Jinping held a welcome ceremony for Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah at the North Hall of the Great Hall of the People.
A 21-gun salute was fired at Tian'anmen Square. The guard of honor lined up in salutation. As the two heads of state stepped onto the stand, the military band played the national anthems of China and Brunei. Accompanied by Xi Jinping, Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah reviewed the honor guard of the People's Liberation Army and watched the march-past.
At noon on the same day, Xi Jinping held a welcome banquet for Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah at the Golden Hall of the Great Hall of the People.
