On June 29, the Main Media Center (MMC) for Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, situated in the second phase of the National Convention Center, was completed, being eligible for the handover to the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. During the Games, the Main Media Center will become the media headquarters for registered print media and broadcasters worldwide.

With a total area of 419,000 square meters, the second phase of the National Convention Center is the latest and largest new project in the Beijing competition area of the Beijing Winter Olympics. It is also an important project to serve China's overall diplomacy and to facilitate the development of Beijing as a center for international exchanges. The MMC is to be set up in the second phase of the project as a temporary venue. With a total usable area of 211,000 square meters, the MMC mainly includes the International Broadcasting Center (IBC) and the Main Press Center (MPC), and is the media headquarters for registered print media and broadcasters worldwide.

"During the Winter Olympics, the MMC is expected to receive more than 3,000 journalists and press photographers, and about 12,000 broadcasters. It is an international news editorial department and TV signal production and transmission center for reporting and broadcasting the grand events of the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics." said Huang Hui, head of the Urban Stadium Construction Division of Beijing Major Projects Construction Headquarters Office. Huang also said that MMC is the headquarters during the Games for the IOC media operation, the Olympic Broadcasting Services, and the media operation of Beijing 2022 Organizing Committee.

To follow through the concept of green Olympics, the main body of the second phase of the National Convention Center has been constructed in accordance with the Three-Star standard of green building and the LEED Platinum standard of the United States. The roof garden on the third floor of the Convention Center adopts an openable roof design, and the glass daylight roof of about 3,000 square meters can be opened widely in a power-driven way to enhance natural ventilation and lighting. Also, the smoke-exhaust function is available for the main building to "breathe together" with the city skyline.

At the same time, the venue makes full use of renewable energy, with a total of 600 square meters of solar thermal system collectors designed and installed, which can meet the need for 17.5 tons of domestic hot water each day. Inside the main building, the all-air air conditioning system can reach an adjustable fresh air ratio of up to 70% during the transition season, and can reduce annual electricity consumption by 31% or so. The amount of electricity saved a year is enough for an electric new energy vehicle to travel 54.5 million kilometers, a length that circles the earth 1363 times.

According to information, the second phase of the National Convention Center will be reconstructed after the Games and will be used as a convention and exhibition building. After completion, the second phase and the first phase of the National Convention Center will constitute a world-class convention and exhibition complex with a total area of more than 1.3 million square meters, which can not only meet the needs of high-end government, state and diplomatic activities, but also the needs of various large-scale international communication events and commercial conferences and exhibitions.
