[Overview] Yangon Region, one of the 14 regions and states of Myanmar, has an area of 10,170 square kilometers and a population of about 7.36 million.

[Politics] There are 44 townships under the jurisdiction of Yangon Region, 33 of which are located in Yangon City. Yangon Region is governed by the Yangon Region Hluttaw and the Yangon Region Government. Members of the Region Hluttaw are elected by the citizens for a term of five years. The chief executive of the provincial government is the chief minister, appointed by the central government. The incumbent Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein took office in March 2016.

[Economy] Yangon Region is the economic center of Myanmar, with its economy powered by agriculture, forestry, manufacturing, and tourism industries.

[Culture and Education] Yangon Region is the educational and cultural center of Myanmar. There are more than 20 colleges and universities, including the University of Yangon, Rangoon Arts and Sciences University, and University of Natural Sciences. Shwedagon Pagoda is the most famous Buddhist building in Yangon. Other well-known tourist attractions include Yangon Museum and Bogyoke Aung San Market named after General Aung San, who was known as the father the country's independence.

[Relations with Beijing] In recent years, Beijing and Yangon Region have conducted friendly exchanges and cooperation in religion, municipal management, and other fields.

Religious exchanges: In 2012, Lingguang Temple in Shijingshan District of Beijing was twinned with Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon.

Municipal Administration: In 2018, the government of Yangon Region sent staff to participate in the Urban Planning Workshop for Beijing's Sister Cities along the Belt and Road.
