[Overview] Chiang Mai Province is located in northern Thailand, 750 kilometers from Bangkok. It occupies an area of about 20,000 square kilometers and has a population of some 1.73 million. Its capital is also named Chiang Mai.

[Politics] The governor of Chiang Mai Province is appointed by the Thai Cabinet to implement policies and decrees issued by the prime minister. The term of office is generally one to three years. The incumbent Governor Charoenrit Sanguansat took office in October 2019.

[Economy] Chiang Mai Province is the economic center of northern Thailand. The pillar industry is tourism, which accounts for 22.7% of its GRP, followed by manufacturing, commerce, and agriculture.

[Tourism] Chiang Mai Province has a pleasant subtropical climate and beautiful scenery, and thus it is hailed as the “Rose of the North”. It attracts a large number of domestic and foreign tourists every year. The most popular tourist attractions include Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, PP Erawan Palms Resort, and Bai Orchid and Butterfly Farm. Chiang Mai also attracts tourists with a variety of folk events, such as the Songkran Festival, Loy Krathong, Lamphun Lamyai Festival, Lychee Fair and Festival, and pageants.

[Relations with Beijing] In recent years, the relations between Beijing and Chiang Mai Province have been on an upswing. In May 2017, a delegation composed of representatives from Chiang Mai International Airport and other organizations visited Beijing Capital International Airport and the city of Beijing. The two sides exchanged views on how to improve the comprehensive service capabilities of airports and agreed to strengthen cooperation and exchanges regarding airport operations, employee training and joint marketing campaigns.
