Due to the pandemic, the current unemployment rate in Mozambique is very high, and as the year draws to an end, safety and security risks have increased, and the violent crime rate has gone up as well. Recently, there have been many cases of robbery and kidnapping in Maputo. Some victims who resisted robbery attempts had been shot dead, and some suffered huge financial loss.

The Chinese Embassy in Mozambique advises all Chinese-funded enterprises and Chinese people in Mozambique to exercise caution and take effective measures to protect themselves and their property. Other personal security tips include the following:

1. Be vigilant. Pay close attention to local security information. Exercise caution, especially during paydays, holidays and major events. Try to avoid going out at night. Be observant while you are driving or walking, and check often to see if you are followed. Do not always travel the same routes. Avoid carrying large sums of money. Try to use checks, electronic funds transfer, or credit cards instead.

2. Investigate potential safety hazards. Carry out safety risk assessments periodically on office and residential property. Always be prepared. Address security vulnerabilities in time. Keep cash and valuables properly. Avoid carrying a large sum of cash with you or storing it at home. Carry out background checks before hiring local employees or domestic helpers and watch out for any suspicious behaviors to avoid their complicity.

3. Strengthen security measures. Increase investment in security facilities and personnel. Strengthen personal and property security by installing an electric perimeter security fence, reinforcing the fence, hiring a professional security company, and installing surveillance and intrusion alarm systems with cloud backup and night vision cameras.

In case of an emergency, stay calm. Make personal safety top priority. Do not argue with the perpetrator or fight back. Promptly report to the police or get help from the embassy once you are safe.
