Data shows that from January to August this year, the BCIA served a total of 280,000 flights and transported 44.85 million passengers, representing a year-on-year rise of 18 percent and 34 percent, respectively. Notably, due to the rapid growth in flight and passenger volume at BCIA fueled by a booming summer travel season, the airport witnessed 76,000 flights and 12.15 million passengers in total this summer. The peak daily passenger volume reached nearly 230,000, and in August alone, the passenger volume reached 6.23 million, with an average of 200,000 passengers per day, up 19 percent compared with the previous year. Among them the international and regional passenger volume reached 1.46 million, a year-on-year increase of 55 percent. Furthermore, August also saw record numbers of overall passengers as well as international and regional passengers in the past four years.

Airport filled with passengers

During the summer travel rush, the passenger volume to popular domestic destinations such as Shanghai, Chengdu, Urumqi, Xi’an and Xiamen  registered a significant rise of over 10 percent year on year. Meanwhile, passenger volume to East Asia and Western Europe grew by 78 percent and 42 percent respectively compared to last year. As a result, the number of passengers traveling to Japan, the Republic of Korea, Thailand, Singapore, the United Kingdom, among other countries reported a substantial rise. Apart from launching several international flights to destinations such as Dhaka, Tijuana and Mexico City this summer, the airport also increased flights to popular destinations like Moscow, Athens, Budapest, Barcelona and Stockholm, offering more options for passengers.

By the end of August, the BCIA’s expanding route network had covered 217 destinations in 54 countries, including 127 domestic destinations and 90 international and regional ones. Currently, the airport operates over 20 weekly round-trip flights to European cities like Frankfurt, Paris, London, and Munich, and more than 50 weekly round-trip flights to Asian cities such as Seoul, Tokyo, Singapore, and Bangkok. Furthermore, driven by the increasing economic, trade and cultural exchanges among the Belt and Road countries, the BCIA has launched flights to 34 BRI countries, which have become a significant contributor to its international business.

Aimed at offering passengers a more convenient and comfortable travel experience, the BCIA has been focusing on shuttle services, efficient transfer processes and streamlined customs clearance, while strengthening cooperation with airlines to optimize route network. Moreover, it has partnered with various organizations to carry out marketing activities, including series marketing of international routes, promotion of inbound tourism, photo exhibitions of sister airports, summer carnivals and on-campus interaction during the graduation season. Such efforts have generated remarkable results.
