Recently, participants of the ‘Seminar on the Protection and Development of Intangible Cultural Heritage for French-Speaking Countries in Africa’, a foreign aid training project by the China International Development Cooperation Agency, visited the Sanlihe Park in Qianmen area, Yanliao (Pigment) Guild Hall and other places. The aim was to gain insight into Beijing Central Axis, learning about Dongcheng District’s experience in protecting and preserving of intangible cultural heritage.
The rivers meander through the alleys surrounding Qianmen, with willow trees swaying and fish swimming. The participants strolled through the Sanlihe Park, where a picturesque display of Beijing’s five distinctive ancient cultures unfolded: architecture, folklore, Beijing opera, merchants and guild halls. Modern cafes and workshops are scattered throughout the park. The Yanliao Guild Hall served as a gathering place for ‘intangible cultural heritage’, hosting a succession of artistic performances. African friends were captivated by the melodious singing and ribbon dance of an excerpt from the Beijing opera The Heavenly Maid Scatters Blossoms. During the interactive session, they eagerly tried on Beijing opera costumes and learned the movements, exclaiming, ‘It’s thrilling and satisfying!’
The participants said, ‘This rewarding trip deepened our understanding of Global Development Initiative and Global Civilization Initiative advocated by China. We look forward to more opportunities for in-depth exchanges and cooperation in the future.’
