Despite their busy schedule, they take time to explore the vibrant streets and alleys of Beijing, immersing themselves in the history and cultural allure of this modern metropolis. Who are they? They are ambassadors representing over 170 countries across Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, South America and Oceania, in China.
Curious about their impressions of Beijing? Which popular tourist attractions have they visited, and what cuisines do they like? Do they prefer unwinding at a cafe in Sanlitun, cycling along the riverbanks, or taking leisurely strolls after work? Moreover, what messages do they wish to convey to the people of Beijing?
In today's edition of "Beijing in the Eyes of Ambassadors", we will take you to the Jordanian Embassy. This time, we have the privilege to hear from Jordanian Ambassador H.E. Hussam Al Husseini, as he shares his impression of Beijing and his aspirations for stronger economic and cultural exchanges between China and Jordan.
Beijing, A City Where History and Modernity Intertwine Seamlessly
When asked about his impression of Beijing, Ambassador Husseini described it as a big diverse city where one can "transfer from history to modern time" in a matter of minutes. As you visit magnificent historical sites and cultural landmarks, you may easily "jump into the city's most contemporary and modern scenery" in just a few minutes' walk.
Speaking of Beijing's modern architecture, the Ambassador used words like "attractive", "fascinating", and "unique" to express his admiration. He was particularly impressed by the dazzling light show along the Liangma River and the distinctive skyscrapers in the CBD. "It's a really very nice and relaxing area," he noted.
When it comes to the trendy "City Walk", Ambassador Husseini revealed that he enjoys spending leisure time strolling along the riversides and in parks with his family and friends, exploring the vibrancy of hutongs, or indulging in shopping experiences in places like Wangfujing. He added that wherever he goes, there is always something new to discover. Ambassador Husseini also mentioned that from the pinnacle of a skyscraper, the panoramic view of Beijing is truly remarkable. The endless flow of vehicles and twinkling lights from countless homes create a stunning landscape.
The Ambassador's Keen Interest in Science Parks and Innovative Enterprise
Ambassador Husseini visited companies such as Pony.ai and BOE in the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area not long after his arrival in the city. He showed a strong interest in understanding how science parks in China support startups and provide platforms for businesses, particularly new ones, to share infrastructure and technology.
Ambassador Husseini said, "We have a number of industrial parks in each of our provinces in Jordan, at least one or two." Acknowledging the pivotal role these parks play in driving economic and technological progress, he believes that Beijing could serve as a role model in providing technology platforms for entrepreneurs, supporting startups, and encouraging innovation through such parks.
Regarding autonomous driving, Ambassador Husseini said that he was one of those very few who witnessed the technology at the very early stages and was fascinated by such breakthroughs. During the 2023 Reception in Honor of Foreign Diplomatic Missions to China hosted by Beijing Municipality in the "Ice Ribbon", he took another test ride in an autonomous vehicle. He praised the technology as "not only successful, but also very professional and very safe!"
When asked about his interest in purchasing a driverless car, the Ambassador highlighted that China is Jordan's second largest trading partner. In his country, 80% of electric cars are made in China and Chinese cars have an excellent reputation. Last month, the two countries signed an MOU on Belt and Road Cooperation, which the Ambassador believes will not only promote development, but also facilitate people-to-people exchanges.
The Millennium-old Silk Road: A Testament to Our Enduring Friendship
Talking about Jordan's history and culture, the Ambassador spoke with great pride. He said that Jordan's strategic location at the crossroads of civilizations has turned the country into "an open museum". "A tour in Jordan will take you through the series of phases of history from the Greek time to the Roman time to of course the Arabic times", he added.
Besides, Jordan is truly blessed with breathtaking natural landscapes. For example, the famous Dead Sea is not only a popular tourist attraction, but also serves as a therapeutic spa resort. Wadi Rum, a desert area characterized by rocky terrain resembling the surface of Mars and the Moon, has become the filming location for numerous sci-fi movies. As the Ambassador puts it, "you can enjoy the beauty of nature that you can never find somewhere else".
Extending a warm invitation, Ambassador Husseini wishes to welcome more citizens from Beijing to visit Jordan. He said, "We are so proud of how much our friends in China appreciate the beauty of Jordan. They are very much in love with our country to the extent that they keep posting those beautiful memories on social media." He humorously remarked, "With all of these promotions coming from our friends in China, there is not much else to do from our side to promote our country."
Ambassador Husseini believes that our two countries can further strengthen cooperation in cultural exchanges and tourism. As a film enthusiast, he loves Chinese movies and feels a strong connection with the culture and emotions portrayed in Chinese films, despite the language barrier. He also aspires to increased cooperation between the two sides in film and television production and promotion, through platforms like film festivals.
Reflecting on the historical ties between China and Jordan, Ambassador Husseini traced back to over two thousand years ago, when China's spices, tea and silk were transported to Petra through the historical Silk Road. Those goods became favorites of the wealthy dignitaries at that time. Jordan's renowned dish, Mansaf, which incorporates rice from the East, can now also be tasted in restaurants in Beijing. The friendly exchanges spanning two millennia have left lasting imprints on our cultures. Ambassador Husseini believes that the "Belt and Road" Initiative will foster greater openness and cooperation between nations, paving the way for new chapters of cultural exchanges and enduring friendships among peoples.
