On the afternoon of September 17, “Together for a Shared Future” was revealed as the official motto of the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 at the motto launch ceremony held in the Capital Museum. Cai Qi, Secretary of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee and President of the Beijing 2022 Organising Committee (BOCOG), Chen Jining, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, Mayor of Beijing, and Executive President of BOCOG, Xu Qin, Deputy Secretary of the Hebei Provincial Party Committee, Governor of Hebei, and Executive President of BOCOG, attended the event and jointly announced the motto.
Winter Olympics songs that were played at the event set off a warm atmosphere, arousing people’s ardent expectations for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Beijing 2022. When Cai Qi, Chen Jining, Xu Qin and athlete representatives Yang Yang and Long Yun jointly pressed down the starting device, the official motto of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics – “Together for a Shared Future” appeared on the big screen. The audience shouted it out, sincerely inviting the whole world to participate in Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics.
Chen Jining addressed in his speech that the Beijing Winter Olympics is the world’s largest comprehensive winter sports event. Under the strong leadership of the CPC Central Committee, BOCOG has been working closely with all parties at home and abroad to overcome difficulties and challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The venues and infrastructure have been basically completed with steady progress in event organization, venue operation and competition services. The promotion activities of the Winter Olympics continue to heat up, as in-depth international exchanges and cooperation are being carried out and the work on sustainability and heritage has achieved remarkable results. All preparations have been basically ready as planned. The release of the motto will attract more friends to pay attention to and participate in the Winter Olympics, and convey to the people of the world the good wishes of joining together for a better future through solidarity and mutual assistance.
BOCOG launched a call for ideas in May 2020, soliciting motto proposals from Tsinghua University, Peking University, Renmin University of China, Communication University of China, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, etc. Multiple rounds of review had been carried out and opinions from relevant parties and experts had been drawn on before the motto was finally decided by BOCOG, the International Olympic Committee, and the International Paralympic Committee. “Together” depicts how mankind stays strong when facing adversities and points out the solution to overcome those difficulties and create a better future; “For a Shared Future” embodies a vision for a better life and conveys hope and confidence. “Together for a Shared Future”, as an attitude, an initiative, and most importantly, a plan of action, advocates a universal goal of unity, peace, progress, and inclusiveness. It’s the Chinese interpretation of the Olympic spirit.
Zhang Xu, Du Zhaocai, Zhang Weixing, Yan Pengcheng, Zhang Jiaming, Zhang Jiandong, Jin Wei, Yang Shuan, Yu Zaiqing, Han Zirong, Jiang Xiwei, leaders of relevant central departments, Hebei Province, Beijing and BOCOG, attended the event, along with experts, athletes, representatives of universities and college students.
