Over the past few years, Beijing has been working with the International Union for Conservation of Nature to carry out the Miyun Reservoir Forest Landscape Restoration and Ecosystem Services Improvement Initiative, which has effectively promoted the ecologically sustainable development of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region by restoring forest landscape, promoting ecological restoration of water bodies and biodiversity conservation.

The project selected the Xiaowopu sub-basin, a major ecological barrier and water source in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region, as the representative plot. In accordance with the IUCN Global Standards, Beijing adopted the internationally advanced philosophy of "nature-based solution" while taking its actual conditions into consideration. The work we focus on includes the following:

First, improve the quality of the water conservation forest. We carried out ecological restoration of water bodies in the sub-basin, built protection forests with local plants and carried out close-to-nature forestry to improve the landscape and reduce soil erosion.

Second, establish under-forest economic demonstration plots. We helped the local villagers grow herbs, which not only improved soil and water conservation but also increased villagers' income and helped revitalize rural communities.

Third, raise public awareness about environmental protection. We prepared learning materials and organized learning activities about forest and water conservation for residents and tourists to enhance people's understanding of the local ecological system through fun courses such as interaction with digital maps.

Since the project was carried out one year ago, the Miyun reservoir forest landscape and its ecosystem services have been improved and local villagers are increasingly more active in participating in ecological protection. This demonstration project is a vivid example of practicing Xi Jinping's Thought on Ecological Civilization, which can be promoted and replicated elsewhere.

Headquartered in Switzerland, IUCN is the world's largest and oldest international non-governmental organization in the field of nature conservation. It was founded in 1948, and has significant stature in the global nature conservation community. In recent years, Beijing has carried out practical cooperation with the organization in the field of ecological restoration among other areas and has achieved good results.
