On the afternoon of April 21, Li Xiuling, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Beijing Municipal People’s Congress, met with Cheong Weng Chon, President of the Legislative Assembly of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR).
During the meeting, Li shared with the delegation an overview of the legislative, supervisory and other work of the Standing Committee of the Beijing Municipal People’s Congress. He said that since Macao’s return to the motherland, the SAR has leveraged its advantages of “being backed by the motherland and connected to the world”, making substantial progress in economic and social development, and achieving great success in the practice of “one country, two systems” with Macao characteristics. Exchanges and cooperation between Beijing and Macao in such fields as scientific and technological innovation, economy and trade, conventions and exhibitions, culture and tourism, and education have also yielded fruitful results. Following the directives of General Secretary Xi Jinping regarding Beijing’s development, Beijing is making every effort to implement the 15th Five-Year Plan, and promoting new progress in the city’s endeavors on all fronts. The Standing Committee of the Beijing Municipal People’s Congress stands ready to strengthen exchanges with the Legislative Assembly of the Macao SAR, continuously enhance mutual understanding and mutual learning, create a sound rule-of-law environment for all-round cooperation between Beijing and Macao SAR, and contribute to the high-quality development of the two places.
Cheong said that Macao SAR and Beijing have long maintained close exchanges and cooperation. He expressed the hope that the two sides will deepen communication and exchanges between their legislative bodies, closely follow legislative practices in areas such as new technologies and new business forms, share legislative experience, and better serve the economic and social development of the two places.
