On the morning of September 24, Yin Yong, Mayor of Beijing, met with a delegation from the House of Representatives of the Congress of the United States (U.S.) led by Representative Adam Smith.

Yin noted that, not long ago, President Xi Jinping spoke with U.S. President Donald J. Trump on the phone, providing strategic guidance for the steady development of China-U.S. relations going forward. The hope of the China-U.S. relationship lies in the people, its foundation is in the two societies, its future depends on the youth, and its vitality comes from exchanges at subnational level. As the capital, Beijing will actively implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state and play an exemplary and guiding role in advancing subnational exchanges between China and the U.S. In recent years, Beijing has prioritized the city’s strategic positioning as the capital, fully implemented the Master Plan of Development for Beijing (2016-2035), and bolstered its position as the “four centers”. The city has explored effective solutions to “big city malaise” while avoiding overstretching its limited resources, and addressed key issues to improve people’s wellbeing through providing better social services in seven aspects and meeting public expectations for a better life in five areas. The goal is to establish an effective governance system for a megacity and build Beijing into a world-class metropolis that is harmonious and livable. Yin said Beijing is ready to deepen exchanges with U.S. local governments in urban governance and other areas. He also encouraged the Representatives to leverage their strengths to establish communication channels and promote new progress in bilateral cooperation.

David Perdue, U.S. Ambassador to China, and Zeng Jin, Secretary General of the Beijing Municipal Government, attended the meeting.
