At noon on September 6, 2024, President Xi Jinping met with Liberian President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, who is in China for the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The two heads of state announced the elevation of the China-Liberia relationship to a strategic partnership.
Xi Jinping pointed out that China and Liberia enjoy friendly relations. In recent years, the Chinese and Liberian people have stood together in the joint fight against Ebola and COVID-19, and engaged in sincere cooperation in the cause of national development, adding new dimensions to bilateral relations. China is ready to work with Liberia to solidly and steadily advance the implementation of the outcomes of the Beijing Summit under the framework of FOCAC and continuously lift the strategic partnership between the two countries to new levels.
Xi Jinping emphasized that China appreciates President Joseph Nyumah Boakai's firm commitment to the one-China principle and is ready to strengthen exchanges and dialogue with Liberia, support each other on issues related to each other's respective core interests and major concerns, and safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests. China is ready to provide support to the best of its ability for Liberia's infrastructure construction and strengthen cooperation in maritime transport, agriculture, resources development and other fields. As members of the Global South, China and Liberia should work together with other developing countries to uphold fairness and justice and promote more just and equitable global governance.
Joseph Nyumah Boakai thanked China for its long-term and valuable support to Liberia, saying that China's cooperation has improved the lives of the Liberian people in many aspects such as infrastructure, health and education. China is a true friend of Liberia. He expressed the willingness to reiterate that the Liberian government firmly pursues the one-China policy and is committed to developing the strategic partnership with China. He expressed the hope to take the implementation of the outcomes of the FOCAC Beijing Summit as an opportunity to continuously deepen practical cooperation in various fields and help Liberia achieve modernization.
During the summit, China and Liberia signed bilateral cooperation documents in maritime transport and other fields.
