On the afternoon of September 25, Beijing shared its experience in epidemic prevention and control at a video conference with the United Cities and Local Governments Asia Pacific (UCLG ASPAC). Yang Peng, Director of the General Office of the Beijing Center for Global Health under the Beijing Center for Disease Prevention and Control (Beijing CDC) and Liu Jingyuan, Director of the Department of Critical Care Medicine of Beijing Ditan Hospital shared the city's best practices and successful experience in epidemic response, such as conducting society-wide prevention and control, improving nucleic acid testing capacity, addressing people's concerns in an open and transparent manner, preventing hospital-acquired infection and treating severe cases. All these were major concerns of UCLG ASPAC members, winning high praise from the attendees.
The conference was co-organized by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) and UCLG ASPAC. Song Jingwu, Co-President of UCLG ASPAC and Vice President of the CPAFFC, Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi, Secretary General of UCLG ASPAC, and more than 110 delegates from 60-plus member cities of UCLG ASPAC attended the conference. Apart from Beijing, another five Chinese cities including Hangzhou, Wuhan, Guiyang, Wuxi and Yiwu also shared their experience in medical care, treatment, resumption of work and production and reopening of schools and other aspects and answered questions raised by the foreign attendees.
The United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) is the largest international organization composed of cities and sub-national governments and an important platform for the city of Beijing to participate in global governance. Beijing joined UCLG in October 2006 as a member of UCLG ASPAC. In April 2007, the city was elected a member of the UCLG ASPAC Council and Executive Bureau, and has been re-elected ever since. In recent years, Beijing has conducted extensive and fruitful cooperation with UCLG in culture, healthcare and other areas.
