From
October 28 to November 4, 2020, youths from Beijing and its sister
cities had online discussions about global governance. Over 200
people from 29 organizations of 24 countries across the world
participated in the event.
The
participants discussed three topics of global concern, focusing on
the youth's responsibility in global governance and the measures to
be taken. In the spirit of promoting understanding through exchanges
and achieving win-win cooperation, they put forward their opinions on
making the world a better place. The details are as follows:
Topic
I: The Youth and Public Health Emergency Governance
School
of Public Health, Capital Medical University:
To
deal with public health emergencies, we need to develop a
comprehensive and well-coordinated emergency response system.
Republican
Proposal (PRO), Argentina:
We
are grateful that China shared with us effective measures and
experiences in dealing with COVID-19 at the critical period of
epidemic response, which has helped us fight the epidemic. The
epidemic has brought both challenges and opportunities. Despite the
crisis, we have observed the best of humanity, and we have realized
the power of solidarity.
Saint
Petersburg State University of Economics:
College
students are also members of the society. We should do our utmost to
protect those in need so that doctors can treat and care for the
infected. We hope to introduce a new cooperation project to
international youth organizations online, and look forward to working
together with medical students from various countries to make youths' contributions to the global prevention and control of COVID-19.
Student
Volunteers Foundation, Malaysia:
When
faced with a public crisis, young people are quick to offer their
ideas. People from different backgrounds tend to see things
differently and will offer new ideas. We need to have an open mind
and summarize and absorb different ideas to meet the challenges.
Department
of Health, Vientiane, Laos:
We
are very grateful to Beijing Youth Federation for creating this
platform, which allows us to share our ideas and exchange with youths
from different countries and learn from each other. In the face of
the epidemic, we have established a bottom-up emergency management
system from communities to provinces, to the country and to the
region, and a mechanism for joint action of the government and the
people.
Arniko
Society, Nepal:
Actions
of the government and the youth are both very important for epidemic
prevention and control. With close cooperation between the government
and youth organizations, we are confident that we will win a victory
over COVID-19.
Students
from Rwanda:
China's
epidemic prevention and control measures are enlightening to Rwanda.
We are grateful to China for its medical aid. Thanks to China's
assistance and the efforts of the government of Rwanda, the epidemic
has been put under control in Rwanda. The epidemic has also attracted
more attention to public health and personal health among the
government and the people of Rwanda.
Topic
II: The Youth and Ecological Governance
Beijing
University of Technology:
Beijing
is promoting garbage sorting by developing a comprehensive scheme,
making plans for the development of recycling industries, publicizing
knowledge about garbage sorting through entertaining activities, and
exploring diverse business models for garbage recycling.
Future
Forest:
The
world loses 24 soccer fields of land to desert every minute, and
twice the area of the Republic of Korea every year. We hope to
strengthen cooperation with youth organizations in various countries
to build a green Great Wall with the power of the youth. We believe
that our joint efforts will produce the effect that 1 plus 1 is
greater than 2.
China-Maldivian
Cultural Association:
The
Maldives is surrounded by ocean water above 25℃. Global warming has
posed a significant existential threat to island countries like the
Maldives. If we do not recognize the seriousness of this issue and
take effective measures, we will face incalculable consequences.
Young people represent the future. We hope that they will learn and
apply new technologies to solve the environmental problems we are
facing for the benefit of future generations.
Association
for Sri Lanka-Chinese Social and Cultural Cooperation:
We
are grateful to Beijing Youth Federation for creating this platform
so that youths from around the world can exchange their ideas and
contribute to environmental protection. Sri Lanka is known as the
Island of Paradise. Despite its small territory, it has the greatest
biodiversity in Asia. Sri Lanka is also facing a lot of challenging
environmental issues. We share the planet Earth. If any country does
not live a sustainable lifestyle, it will have an impact on the
quality of life of people around the globe and the environment.
International
Affairs Division, Bangkok, Thailand
Thailand
has taken many effective measures to mitigate air and noise
pollution, such as Earth Hour, online shopping, plastic bag bans, and
vehicle emission inspection every 6 months. We hope you find these
measures mind-opening.
Foundation
of Regional Initiatives (Youth NGO), Ukraine:
We
have taken some measures for ecological conservation in our country.
For example, we promote zero-waste communities, organize summer camps
to enable the youth to understand and appreciate the natural
environment, and paint on recyclable cups so that people are willing
to reuse them.
Students
from Rwanda:
For
ecological and environmental governance, youths worldwide should
stand in solidarity, abandon discrimination, support and help each
other, and make concerted efforts to contribute to ecological and
environmental conservation.
Topic
III: The Youth and Poverty Governance
Beijing
Municipal Committee of the Communist Youth League:
The
Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Youth League and the
Beijing Youth Federation have taken into account the characteristics
of poverty-stricken areas and conducted investigations to find out
the causes of poverty and the needs of the poor. In view of the
characteristics of Beijing, we have brought together people from all
walks of life and transformed the capital's strengths and resources
into important forces in poverty alleviation. We always value
innovation to enhance the endogenous motivation of the poor and
promote the sustainable development of recipient areas. Giving full
play to our advantages in mobilization, we have taken solid measures
to help the poor, and actively encourage youths of Beijing to
participate in poverty governance.
Women and Children Self-reliance Group,Bangladesh:
Bangladesh
is a relatively poor country in the world. To improve the
sustainability of poverty reduction, we have launched a self-reliance
movement. According to the concept of circular economy, Bangladeshi
designers join hands with Japanese designers to design embroidery
patterns, and Bangladeshi rural women make hand embroidery on old
clothes, which are sold and promoted through online and offline
exhibitions. We hope to promote the concept of self-reliance
worldwide.
Bellpo
Organization, Japan:
Japan
attaches great importance to education for the poor, leaving no child
behind. The government has introduced the "children's cafeteria" program to provide poor children with daily food, with ingredients
donated by local farmers. Many companies provide support for poor
children for more than 10 years to help them complete their education
and contribute to the society.
Zhangjiakou
Youth Federation:
After
graduating from university, I started a business in my hometown,
aiming to make it a better place and help local poor families shake
off poverty. I am confident that the youth have the knowledge and
ability to change the world for the better. A way to do this is to
help others live better lives through our efforts. It is also the
best way to fulfill ourselves.
Social
Democratic Mongolian Youth Union, Mongolian Social Democratic Party:
The
youth are the mainstay for poverty governance. We must place great
emphasis on science and technology and use technologies to live in
the border-less Earth village. In Mongolia, with the Internet, we can
have access to leading courses in the world.
Youth
and Teenager Development Association, Singapore:
We
need to distribute more resources, such as education, employment,
health care and housing, to low-income and vulnerable groups. The
government provides a lot of training programs for the youth to learn
skills and get better jobs. We are promoting digital learning, with
which poor students can study and attend after-school activities
online.
Mexican
Embassy in China:
China
has made great achievements in poverty alleviation and will achieve
the UN's poverty reduction goal ahead of schedule, which will be a
significant contribution to the global implementation of the 2030
Agenda for Sustainable Development.
This is attributed to the efforts of the Chinese government, Chinese
people and social forces. China's successful experience is very
important for Mexico. We should learn from China.
BAIC
Group:
BAIC
has taken proactive measures to fulfill its responsibility as a
state-owned enterprise and participate in poverty alleviation by
purchasing goods from poor regions, improving education, and
developing industries in poor regions. BAIC has also launched the "Create Smiles for the World" activity to help poverty-stricken
areas in other countries.
Students
from Rwanda:
We
strongly believe in the power of education in fighting against
poverty and developing economy. The government unites all people
through the implementation of educational programs. For example, it
awards principal's scholarships to outstanding students, provides
vocational training for the youth, encourages the youth to start
businesses through mobile phones and the Internet, vigorously
promotes gender equality, and guides young people to participate in
making development plans.
Young
Malaysians Movement, Johor Bahru, Malaysia:
Many
people in Malaysia live in poverty and misery. The Malaysian
government has made a poverty reduction plan. We organize charity
running programs, in which more than 5,000 people have participated.
The funds raised have supported 100 poor families. We know a famous
Chinese saying that one should never stint on education however poor
one may be. We encourage social forces to make donations to support
primary education.
