All districts in Beijing have been proactively implementing a special action plan to improve the international language environment for Beijing Olympic Winter Games with various measures.

Chaoyang
District has developed a plan for all 43 subdistricts and townships
to check, revise, and improve foreign language signs in key
locations. Officials conducted field research in key areas to
familiarize themselves with foreign-related resources of each
department, check bilingual signs and offer suggestions for
improvement. They also assisted the Beijing CBD Administrative
Committee to complete the review of foreign language signs in core
areas. Besides, they reviewed the foreign language profile of the
Beijing Music Industrial Park, a new international venue located in
the Heizhuanghu township, and held a meeting regarding the
translation of the foreign language signs in the park ahead of time.
What's more, Chaoyang conducted foreign language and foreign
service reception training for 31 official reception hotels for the
Olympic Winter Games in the district with the attendance reached 1600
in eight days.
Based
on its list of internationalization projects, Chaoyang District will
implement the preparation work for the Winter Olympics and
Paralympics, and continue to check, revise and improve signs in key
fields. It will also further enhance foreign language skills of
window service staff of key industries through language training.

District Assessed Hotels' Foreign Language Proficiency

District organized experts to conduct a comprehensive assessment of
"foreign language proficiency, foreign etiquette and emergency
management" on over 1,000 employees from 10 official
reception hotels for the Winter Olympicsin the district, which is followed by customized training plans to
improve the foreign language reception skills of the hotels.
According to the Beijing
Municipal Regulations on the Management of Public Signs in Foreign
Languages,Haidian District has designated 36 key public spaces for the year. By
the end of July, it has completed the standardization of foreign
language signs in 25 key public spaces and revised over 300 foreign
language signs that failed to meet due standards.
Haidian District will continue to strengthen the basic foreign language skills of departments that serve as a window to demonstrate the image of Beijing, support and give guidance to competent departments and government service departments in each industry regarding plans for improving foreign language proficiency. It will also recommend introducing machine translation and digital technologies to further improve the level of foreign language services in places such asofficial reception hotels for the Winter Olympicsand designated hospitals, so as to effectively serve as a window to showcase the capital and enhance Beijing's image as a global city.

Shijingshan
District has been increasing efforts in supervising and checking the
revision of foreign language signs that failed to meet due standards
in key public spaces concerning foreign affairs and the Winter
Olympics, including hospitals, hotels, parks and scenic areas,
shopping malls and supermarkets, Shougang Park, winter sports center
and Winter Olympic neighborhoods. By the end of July, more than 3000
improper foreign language signs have been gradually rectified.
Shijingshan
District will continue to organize and encourage citizens to take
photos of improper foreign language signs in the district and upload
them to "Shijingshan Foreign Affairs" Wechat official account, a
platform where citizens can also learn Winter Olympics facts and
English expressions to improve their foreign language ability.

Inspection of Foreign Language Signs in Hotels in Yanqing
Yanqing
District has clarified the principle of "whoever applies for
setting up the language signs takes the responsibility" and further
improved the working mechanism. Three stages of foreign language
signs review and revision have been conducted, starting with reviews,
followed by corrections and ended with final acceptance checks. By
the end of July, competent
departments of cultural tourism, transportation, and other industries
have fulfilled their responsibilities and proactively conducted
self-review and revision. A total of 427 foreign language signs in
places such as official
reception hotels for the Winter Olympics, designated hospitals and
Beijing Expo Park have been reviewed and 48 non-standard ones have
been rectified.
Yanqing District will conduct site inspections of public spaces includingofficial reception hotels and designated hospitals to ensure that the foreign language signs for the Winter Olympics are fully covered and of no error.
