On the morning of May 18, in order to better serve the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and optimize the international language environment of the capital, the fourth offline error correction activity for "Foreign Language Signage Improvement Month" was carried out in Haidian District. Jiang Lu, Director of the School of European Studies and Director of the Public Signs Translation Research Center, and Zhou Jianbo, Associate Professor of the School of English Language, Literature and Culture, at Beijing International Studies University, were invited to correct the errors of foreign language signs around the Beijing Capital Gymnasium and Wukesong Gymnasium together with officials of relevant departments of Haidian District and volunteers from Tsinghua University.

The experts and volunteers came to the Beijing Capital Gymnasium and Wukesong Gymnasium to check the relevant foreign language signs. The group visited the surroundings of the venues and proposed some revision suggestions to the English translations of their guides and instructions to visitors and acknowledged the translation of most signs around Wukesong Gymnasium, which has rich experience in hosting international events.

Jiang Lu, Director of the School of European Studies and Director of the Public Signs Translation Research Center at Beijing International Studies University , said, "The center for international exchanges is one of Beijing's four important strategic roles. Standardizing foreign language signs is not only a foundation for building up the city's function as a center for international exchanges, but also a direct manifestation of a city's internationalization. Meanwhile, it is also an important approach for us to tell Chinese stories, spread Chinese thoughts and promote our international image."

Harood Nishat, an international student from Tsinghua University, said that the foreign language signs in various public places in Haidian District are very standardized, which has brought him great convenience in his study and life in Haidian. He feels very honored and delighted to participate in the preparatory work for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and to make a contribution to promoting Beijing's role as center for international exchanges.

Prior to this, Haidian District started the standardization of district-wide foreign language signs in 2021, and 55 district member units carried out "inch-by-inch search" at the same time to correct the errors in foreign language signs. Haidian District will take this activity as a new starting point, absorb the opinions and suggestions from experts and volunteers, further improve and promote the standardization of foreign language signs, carry out a series of activities to improve the international language environment in various forms revolving around the development of Beijing as the center for international exchanges and the "two zones", and encourage everyone to actively participate in these efforts.
