On the evening of Jan 24 — 10 days before the Beijing Winter Olympics by local time — the Landmark Cairo Tower in Egypt’s capital staged a light show. The words "Beijing Winter Olympics", "Beijing 2022" and "see you in Beijing in 10 days" and the emblem of the Beijing Winter Olympics were projected on the tower in Chinese, English and Arabic, expressing the good wishes and support for the Beijing Winter Olympics. Chinese ambassador to Egypt, Liao Liqiang, secretary-general of the Egyptian Olympic Committee, Sherif El-Erian, and the public relations director of the Cairo Tower Management Committee, Hani Atala, attended the light show launch ceremony.

Beijing and Cairo established the sister-city relationship in 1990. The two sides have maintained sound official ties in recent years and worked closely together in such areas as trade, technology, culture, education, and urban development. Sherif El-Erian said that he led the Egyptian delegation to participate in the Beijing 2008 Winter Olympics and the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games, from which he learned about China’s outstanding ability to organize activities. Currently, Egyptian-Chinese relations are at the highest level in multiple fields including sports. People from all walks of life in Egypt firmly support China in hosting the Winter Olympics, believing it to be a mega sporting event which can gather outstanding athletes around the world and promote culture communication.
