During the XVIII World Water Congress held in Beijing, the Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, together with the Miyun District, assisted the Ministry of Water Resources in hosting representatives from the third Lancang-Mekong Water Resources Cooperation Forum. More than 20 government officials and scholars from the five Mekong countries (Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam) visited Heishansi Village in Xiwengzhuang Town to observe the demonstration project on small watershed management.

The small watershed management project in Heishansi Village is a collaborative effort between China and the United Nations Development Programme. Specifically, it is undertaken by the Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences. The project aims to protect water sources and control pollution. To achieve this, the project is conducting research on rapid fertilization technology for agricultural biomass waste, domestic wastewater treatment using constructed wetlands, and biological remediation technology for vegetation affected by soil erosion on sloping land. The project has established a coordinated model that addresses agricultural pollution control while fostering a positive economic environment in Beijing. Ultimately, it promotes sustainable environmental development and has become a demonstration project for agricultural pollution control in the Miyun Reservoir.

Foreign representatives were informed about the protective measures and effectiveness of the Miyun Reservoir, as well as the overall progress of the demonstration project. They were also given a tour of specific projects, including the science and technology backyard, the agroforestry under-forest economic project, the domestic wastewater treatment by constructed wetlands project, the urban agriculture demonstration project, and the agroforestry waste rapid treatment project.

Foreign representatives have expressed that the Heishansi Village small watershed management demonstration project has provided new ideas for small watershed management in their respective countries, offering valuable experiences in maintaining a delicate balance between water resources, population, economy (including agriculture, industry and urban areas), and ecology.

The World Water Congress, organized by the International Water Resources Association (IWRA), stands as one of the most widely attended and influential conferences, and upholds high academic standards in the field of international water resources. This year, China is hosting the event for the first time. The third Lancang-Mekong Water Resources Cooperation Forum is a side event of the XVIII World Water Congress.
