Beijing Daily: "Foreign Language Signage Improvement Month" Campaign Launched

The "Foreign Language Signage Improvement Month" Campaign, jointly sponsored by the Foreign Affairs Office of the People's Government of Beijing Municipality, Beijing Radio and Television Station and Beijing Foreign Studies University, was launched yesterday. With the theme "Welcoming the Winter Olympics and Promoting Improvement", the event will include a number of activities, such as themed offline signage improvement, correction topic collection and interaction, interesting quiz games aboutsignage improvement, etc.

It is reported that the campaign will mainly take place in the Winter Olympic venues, and will adhere to its focus bycombining its efforts on the area surrounding the Winter Olympic venues and key public places. Four offline activities shall be held in Winter Olympic venues in Chaoyang, Haidian, Shijingshan and Yanqing districts. In terms of participants, the activity commits tointegratingprofessionalism and public participation. It invites foreign language experts as "ambassadors of signage improvement", encourages the general public to participate, and invites Chinese and foreign volunteers and experts to visit Winter Olympic venues and key public places together to analyze and correct the signs encountered.

In order to facilitate universal participation, the campaign takes place mainly online and is a combination of online and offline activities. The "Beijing time" appand website will set up special online topics, open a page for collectingincorrectforeign language signs, and launch prize-winning quiz games. The official WeChat account of "Beijing Foreign Affairs" will also simultaneously open a "snapshot" mini app for foreign language signage improvement.

The "Foreign Language Signage Improvement Month" campaign marks the official start of the special action to "Welcome the Winter Olympics and Promote Improvement" in the developmentof an international language environment. In the follow-up, a series of activities in diversified forms will be carried out around five major special actions, including building a foreign language environment within the Winter Olympic competition area, standardizing foreign language signs, strengthening urban foreign language service abilities, makinginternational language environment more law-based and eliciting social participation.
