According to the relevant national regulations, foreign nationals residing or staying in residences other than hotels shall register with the local public security organs within 24 hours of moving in or have the owners of the residences do so on their behalf. 

The residents of Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan staying with relatives or friends shall register for temporary residence at local police stations or household registration offices within 24 hours after arrival (72 hours in rural areas) or have their friends or relatives do so on their behalf. For Hong Kong and Macao residents holding the Residence Permits for Hong Kong and Macao Residents and Taiwan residents holding the Residence Permits for Taiwan Residents, whose residential addresses have not changed, they are no longer required to register their accommodation.

Can I use a foreign, non-local mobile phone number?

Only the phone numbers registered in the Chinese mainland can be used for registration. Overseas numbers are not supported at present.

What materials need to be submitted to register accommodation online?

You'll need a photo of the first page of your exit-entry document, your bareheaded photo, and a photo of the address information page of the house property right certificate or lease contract.

Which exit and entry documents should the applicant have for online registration?

Four kinds of entry-exit identity documents are accepted: a foreign passport, a Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card, a Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kongand Macao Residents, and a Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents. Unless you have one of these, you'll still need to register in person at a police station.

What if I don't speak Chinese? Can I still register through this convenient channel?

Of course! In addition to Chinese, the online accommodation registration system provides services in English, French, Japanese, Korean, and Russian.

How do I check whether I've registered successfully?

After submission, the status of your accommodation registration will be displayed in "My Records" (我的记录). An electronic Accommodation Registration Form can be viewed and printed if the application has been completed successfully. If your application has been denied, follow the prompts and resubmit the application or go to a nearby police station to register in person.
