Robotic 3D Printed Concrete House Building System Displays Some of Its Applications

On September 22, 2021, Beijing Design Week was opened at the Beijing Institute of Future Design in Zhangjiawan Design town, Tongzhou District. From the 22nd to the end of the National Day holiday break, a series of design exhibitions, fairs, forums, tours, and events were held one after another, which once again started a craze for "watching design shows in Beijing during the National Day holiday." Zhangjiawan Design town, where the permanent venue for Beijing Design Week is located, showed its features as a design town, vibrant town and smart town, which enabled visitors to enjoy life with its design and technologies. The newly built Beijing Smart Living Lab presented convenient scenarios in the future daily life.

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) approved the construction of the "National Artificial Intelligence Innovation Application Pilot Zone" in Beijing. In order to implement the action plan of the pilot zone, encourage Beijing artificial intelligence enterprises to participate in the development of smart life and support enterprises in improving product development and iterative development of technology, Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology cooperated with Tongzhou District in building the Beijing Smart Living Lab at the Beijing Municipal Administrative Center.

The Smart Living Lab is a fixed exhibition hall located in the Beijing Institute of Future Design, which displays many scenarios of people's daily life in the future. The self-measurement equipment in the shopping mall can get accurate measurements of each part of one's body so that customers will no longer have trouble picking the right size when shopping for clothes. The smart toilet in hospitals can automatically complete the urine test, saving people the trouble of holding a test tube to collect urine during medical examinations. The digital mirror on the dressing desk at home can analyze facial health conditions, allowing beauty lovers to have accurate data analysis of any facial skin flaws.

There are even more smart gadgets for the elderly. The smart water meter and electricity meter at home can automatically submit meter readings on a regular basis. In this way, there is no need to check the meter manually. In addition, the meters will send an alarm when they detect abnormal water and electricity consumption at home, in case that accidents happen to seniors who live alone. There is also a carpet in the room that can intelligently analyze changes in people's gait, which can carry out real-time monitoring of the elderly, pregnant women and other groups of people who need special care and will automatically send an alarm when they fall.

The barrier-free scenarios for smart life that will be applied to the Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games also showcase several applications, such as mobile terminals, smart parking, and assistive glasses for the visually impaired. With the assistive glasses, visually impaired athletes will be able to walk indoors and outdoors as easily as ordinary people, going all the way from the Winter Olympic Village to the ski center, the alpine skiing viewing area and the lift station. The system will also promptly remind the wearer when to show their ID, when to contact the staff, and ask them whether to choose the lift or stairs, among other services that it provides.

According to Guo Shaoshan, vice president of the Beijing Institute of Future Design of BIAD, the theme of this Beijing Urban and Architecture Biennale is "Home of the Future," where people can experience the normality of future life. In the institute, where the Smart Living Lab is located, self-service late-night eateries, self-service craft beer, and self-service KFC breakfast trucks have already been put to use. The staff there are one step ahead in experiencing the convenience of smart living.

The solar trees and the system for robotic 3D printing of concrete houses at the exhibition showed the technological strengths of the design town. The award-winning design drawings at the 2021 Beijing Engineering Survey and Design Excellent Works Exhibition also demonstrated Beijing's strength in architectural engineering design, landscape design, urban renewal and humanistic architecture design.
