China's first track ice making and ice repair team began ice production in the National Sliding Center in Yanqing as planned. Out of the 25 Olympic Winter Games projects in the two zones of Beijing and Yanqing, 24 have seen work resumed, accounting for 96% of the total.
The National Sliding Center is located in the southwest of the Yanqing district, to the west of the Yanqing Olympic Village and Mountain Media Center, and to the south of the National Alpine Ski Center. The project has a floor area of about 60,000 square meters, a track length of about 1.9 kilometers, and a vertical drop of over 120 meters. The completed center will have the world's No. 17, Asia's No. 3, and China's first track for bobsleigh and luge. During the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games, the National Sliding Center will host the bobsleigh, skeleton, and luge events.
According to Beijing Enterprises J. O. Construction Co., Ltd., the work on the National Sliding Center continued throughout the Spring Festival holiday, and the dedicated front-line builders have received training on installing ammonia refrigeration systems and track ice production. In response to unfavorable weather conditions and the sudden COVID-19 outbreak, the construction company Shanghai Baoye has formulated a detailed construction plan. Thanks to the joint efforts between Chinese experts and their international counterparts, the equipment testing, commissioning and operation were advanced through remote instruction and guidance, and the installation of the ammonia refrigeration system and the training on ice making and ice repair were carried out simultaneously, laying a good foundation for ice making.
At present, the ammonia refrigeration system, hailed as “Heart of Dragon,” is running smoothly. All the tracks have been filled with liquid ammonia, and have a good frosting after preliminary testing. In the 18 days starting February 10, four fillings occurred, with a total of 80 tons of liquid ammonia put into China's largest refrigeration system for a stadium.
As of today, there are 25 projects under construction in Beijing and Yanqing zones of the Games. Work has been resumed for 24 of them, including the National Alpine Ski Center and the Yanqing Olympic Village. According to the construction plan, all the competition venues will be completed by the end of this year.
